Sayno 0870

Offcom brings in regulations as a result of campaign Sayno 0870 – bringing about transparency regarding the charges of 0870 numbers to consumers.

Sayno 0870 is a term used in a backlash against the use and pricing of 0870 numbers. Advertised as national rate numbers consumers were finding that calls were often being charged at a higher rate than geographic number ranges. Customers felt like they were having the wool pulled over their eyes and that call charges lacked transparency which forced them to sayno 0870.

Sayno 0870, customer complaints and pressure from parliamentary lobbyists meant action had to be taken. Ofcom began a review of the pricing structure of the 0870 range, bringing in strict regulations that have been in place since the 1st August 2009. The changes to the 0870 prefix structure have effectively ended revenue share opportunities for UK businesses.

0870 numbers are now charged at the same fixed price as national rate geographical numbers (starting 01 or 02), whether a customer is calling from a landline or mobile phone. They will also be included in call packages, charged in accordance with geographical numbers, meaning mobile phone inclusive minutes will also cover 0870 numbers.

Sayno 0870 can be misleading and in no way refers to all non geographic numbers. Ofcom regulations should not send businesses running back to their geographic numbers; the benefits definitely outweigh the cons. Since the new rules have been put in place consumers can be safe in the transparency of pricing. Here is an overview:

  • The revenue share on the 0870 Numbers has ended
  • Businesses will now be charged to receive calls by their current service provider
  • The reason of this change was due to a lack of transparency regarding call charges and to strengthen consumer confidence for calls to 0870 numbers
  • Calls to the 0870 numbers will now be charged at the same rate as dialling an 01 or 02 number

What are the alternatives?

If your company really wants to steer clear of the 0870 number then there are viable non geographical options available.

Business can replace all existing 0870 business contact numbers with new non geographical number. 0871 numbers are the natural replacement, billed as national rate; customers pay a fixed rate no matter what time of day. To earn a rebate from your non geographical number 0871 numbers are a great alternative.

0844 numbers have already been taken on by national companies, such as Barclays, British Airways and ITV Studios. Calling from a BT landline anywhere in the UK only cost 5 pence per minute. 08 Direct’s 0844 numbers have no connection fee meaning callers only pay for the minutes used.
