Non-geographic numbers help businesses continue service during the strikes

Work and home signpost imageSo, we’re halfway through the day which has seen more than one million public sector workers in England go on strike over pension changes.

Whether the strikes are right or wrong is not our place to argue, but the impact on business is undeniable.

With the majority of schools closed due to the teachers’ strike, working parents have faced huge challenges to find childcare in order to be able to go to work. Those who can’t find cover have had to take the day off, leaving some businesses short staffed.

One positive impact of the disruption (for me, anyway!) was that the rush hour traffic was lighter than usual this morning. But anyone using public transport to get to work has faced a whole different set of problems, with the strikes meaning the some services are cancelled altogether. Others are running on limited service.

The strikes highlight the need for disaster planning to ensure continuous service for your customers, even if your staff can’t get into the office to answer the phones.

Business people rely on the phone as these city traders showAs a business owner, I bet you get several calls a week from companies promising to upgrade your office technology with revolutionary new systems that will transform the way you work.

But when you take the plunge and install this technology, you find that these claims were overhyped, or certainly premature, as the technology fails to work as well as you were expecting, or deliver the benefits that justified the investment.

Phone systems are a classic example of this. With the advent of the Internet and mobile communications, many people have forecast the demise of the office phone as it becomes superseded by newer, more advanced technology.

David CameronIn his Party Conference speech yesterday The Prime Minister said that you can’t get out of debt by spending more money.

Of course, I’m paraphrasing, because a) party conference speeches are long and boring and b) in business, you are already well aware of this and that’s why in times of recession businesses seek to reduce costs wherever possible.

In many cases, the marketing budget is often the first casualty, but this has a negative influence on sales and profitability. So although there is some sense in what David Cameron said, we believe you have to cut the right costs and spend your remaining money in the most effective ways.

Call Routing

August 11, 2010 9:21 am | Leave your thoughts

call routingDo you have too many incoming calls to deal with? Are customers left on hold until you are able to pick up the line? Call Routing is the solution to your problems.

Call routing is the ability to direct your inbound calls to a variety of extensions depending on your business requirements. Tailored to your individual needs, call routing means you never miss a potential customer’s call, improving your customer service, increasing sales whilst reducing costs.

Calls can be distributed between available members of staff or directed to those with the most relevant experience.  What is particularly useful is the fact that all lines can be accessed through one billed number, meaning you can keep your stationery costs and marketing low, with calls directed through call routing.

Call routing can work in two ways, either through Hunt Groups or Ring Groups:

Hunt Groups direct calls to free lines after a set number of rings.

Ring Groups all calls to ring on multiple lines simultaneously.

Benefits of Call Routing

Never miss a call

Direct to your most experienced member of staff

Divide calls evenly between staff members, useful if employees are working on a commission basis.

Increase customer service

Increase efficiency

Reduces cost and increases sales

High call volume turnover
