Carphone Warehouse launches mobile payment service SimplyTap

UK highstreet retailer Carphone Warehouse has begun to roll out its brand new mobile payment service.

The new application has been created in conjunction with ‘SimplyTap’, which has been developed by the Mobile Money Network. It will allow users who are browsing participating high street shops to make electronic purchases through their smartphone. This could be through an alphanumeric code, OR code, image recognition, as well as online transactions from an in-app marketplace.

Carphone Warehouse founder Charles Dunstone is a major investor in the project and is taking full advantage of promoting the service through over 800 Carphone Warehouse stores.

From this week Carphone Warehouse staff will introduce the new app to customers and encourage them to install the SimplyTap app on their smartphones.

The app will work by users registering their payment details with the service. From then on, when they wish to purchase a product which has a SimplyTap code printed on it, they can scan or photograph it and it will be immediately purchased. The purchased good will then be delivered to the users registered address.

Carphone Warehouse CEO Andrew Harrision spoke to Telecoms.com regarding the new application: “There is no doubt that mobile is changing the way that people search for and buy products. We know that customers and retailers alike want to take advantage of mobile payments”

He also cited Ofcom statistics which showed 21% of smartphone owners already use apps which scan bar codes, and 31% have taken a photograph of a product they wish to purchase.

Is SimplyTap something that you will be looking into using? Or is your business incorporating products that can be paid for using the new service?
